Timing chain

The Timing chain is a vital component of your Mercedes-Benz vehicle and is responsible for delivering coordination between the crankshaft and camshaft(s), ensuring proper function of the engine’s valves. Incorrect tension upon the timing chain can lead to physical damage to your vehicle; this is usually preceded by obtrusive noises from the engine (particularly during cold start ups).

Crankshaft: The crankshaft is responsible for converting reciprocal movement within the engine to rotational movement, through a long metal bar connected to the wheels

Camshaft:The camshaft is responsible for the opening and closing the intake valves for air/fuel mixture to the engine and letting the spent gasses leave the engine.

Valves: TThe intake (or inlet) valve is responsible for delivering the air/ fuel mixture to the engine. The outlet valve is responsible for letting the exhaust leave the engine. These valves operate at set intervals to ensure efficient operation of your engine.

Manufacturer specifications recommend that your Mercedes-Benzes’ timing chain at set intervals of 100,000 miles.

Haden Birmingham advises that you replace the timing chain on a recently purchased previously owned vehicle as a necessary precaution.

Our expertly trained technicians are aware of areas to diagnose should your vehicle’s timing chain need renewal. These can include:
